It all began with chickens..

I’m a full time wife, mother and ER nurse and part time wanna- be flower farmer and keeper of bees. I dream of slow living and being more self sustaining. I think of sitting on my deck, drinking coffee, contemplating life and watching the sun rise as my rooster welcomes the morning. Slowly making a plan as to”what do I want to do today?” But let’s be real, years of hospital night shift has ruined my ability to get up early. As it is, I crawl out of bed at the last possible second to get myself to work at 7am. When I have a day off it is spent catching up on cleaning, paying bills, grocery shopping, etc. There are not enough hours in the day or days in the week to accomplish my long list of need to do and want to do. Winter, with the cold and the 4′ of snow in my backyard is the only time of year (often November thru March) that there’s actually too much time. Too much time dreaming and waiting for spring. So, when covid hit during spring break almost 2 years ago we were just finishing up a long winter and were now faced with online school and extra time at home. My husband brought up chickens. I had been throwing around the idea of chickens for a couple years but the timing was off. Now that’s all we had. My son and I began transforming an old, 2 story playhouse into a coop and so began the beginning of backyard farming. Now of course, goats have been on my list as well as bees. Goats are going to have to wait but my kids got me all the beginnings of an apiary for Christmas this year. I touched on the flower farming last year, selling potted plants in the spring and fall. I’ve added raised beds and plan to expand to selling bouquets and having a u-cut flower farm and eventually having honey and beeswax products.
